Protect Yourself from the Sun to Prevent Cancer

Avoid the Sun to Lower the Odds of Cancer

Cancer can be a devastating disease that leads to amputation, organ failure and even death. Therefore, it is imperative that you take steps to avoid getting cancer whenever possible. One such tactic to lower your odds of getting such an illness is to protect yourself when you are in the sun. For instance, using sunglasses, staying in the shade and wearing sunscreen can keep the sun’s rays from penetrating your skin.

Artificial Sunlight Can Be Dangerous Too

In addition to avoiding natural sunlight, you may want to avoid tanning beds as the light from a bulb can have some of the same effects as the sun’s rays. Therefore, you could be putting yourself at a higher risk for cancer each time you attempt to get a fake tan. If you want your skin to have some sort of artificial color, it may be best to use a tanning spray that uses natural ingredients and can last for several hours or days.

Stay Inside During the Middle of the Day

Regardless of what time of year it is, you can get a suntan or even a sunburn. Therefore, you should stay inside during the middle of the day when the sun is at its strongest. During the winter months, the sun can reflect off of the snow and make the light even brighter and stronger on your skin. The good news is that you generally avoid mid-day sun during the winter as it comes earlier in the day when you may be at work or otherwise indoors.

Wear Light Colors While Outside

The sun tends to reflect off of light surfaces and is absorbed into darker surfaces. This means that you should try to wear white, light blue or green while you are outside instead of black or brown. In addition to helping your skin stay free from cancer, you will be cooler because you aren’t absorbing as much heat from the sun.

Skin cancer is nothing to take lightly. By taking commonsense safety steps while outdoors, you can reduce your odds of getting sick while enjoying the outdoors. If you have sensitive skin or aren’t sure what type of sunscreen to use, your doctor can recommend an effective product for you.
