How to Avoid Bladder Control Problems

Incontinence is a frustrating ailment that affects more women than men on average. You might be walking across your home, and an accident occurs. To combat these incontinence problems, it’s critical to be aware of their core causes. Prevent bladder control issues by taking care of your body and being aware of your actions. Both your physical and mental well-being will improve as a result.

Stay Hydrated

Drinking water isn’t going to aggravate your incontinence. In fact, staying hydrated helps your bladder remain at its normal size. If you dehydrate yourself in hopes of reducing bladder control problems, the bladder will shrink. When you do drink or eat, the bladder can’t hold as much fluid as before. As a result, you’ll experience bladder problems. Ideally, drink about eight 8-ounce cups of water each day, and your bladder should stay healthy and large enough for normal urination intervals.

Perform Pelvic Floor Muscle Exercises

Just below your bladder is the pelvic floor muscles. Because you don’t consciously use these muscles, they can weaken with age. Try to contract and relax these muscles when you’re sitting down. These are the muscles that you use when you control your urination stream. Perform these contractions every day in order to strengthen the floor muscles. After several months, you’ll notice that your bladder control issues are almost nonexistent. Strengthening these muscles also supports other internal organs, including the intestines and uterus in women.

Lose Weight

Your weight also plays a big roll in bladder control. All of your upper organs, skeleton, muscles and fatty tissues place some strain on the bladder. You may only stand up or walk a few steps and incontinence occurs. By losing weight, you can achieve better bladder control. Your body won’t support so much weight, and the bladder can relax from its stressed state. Take a look at your ideal weight for your age and height, and try to work towards that goal.

Cut Down on Sodas, Coffee and Alcohol

Caffeine found in sodas and coffee will perk you up throughout the day, but they also contribute to bladder problems. Cut down on these drinks and grab a water instead. Alcohol is also a poor choice for bladder control problems because it’s a natural diuretic. You’ll need to urinate more often with alcoholic drinks, and you might have an unexpected incontinence surprise. Limiting all of these drinks also contributes to a healthy weight, which further decreases your incontinence chances.

Cure That Cough

If you smoke or have a chronic ailment that includes coughing, discuss these issues with your doctor. When you cough, you place a lot of pressure on your pelvic floor muscles. Over time, the muscles will weaken and cause bladder problems. Curing the cough at its source is your primary concern. Smoking any substance contributes to chronic coughing so stop this habit altogether. Any chronic ailments, such as underlying diseases, can often be controlled with prescription medication. Reduce your coughing frequency and bladder control will be possible.

Lift With the Legs

You may have lifted heavy items as a young adult, but age will make lifting more difficult. Ideally, ask someone else to pick up heavy objects. If you lift an item on your own, try to contract the pelvic floor muscles in order to avoid any bladder problems. Lifting places incredible strain on the floor muscles, and only strong pelvic contractions can keep the bladder under control.

Discuss any serious concerns about incontinence with your doctor. Other physical issues might be involved, such as an underlying disease. For most people, however, incontinence can be avoided by keeping your muscles strong and the body lean.
