Factors That Can Increase Your Chances of Developing Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a terrible disease that causes your bones to become brittle over time. Discovering the disease early can offer hope to patients. Age and Gender

Osteoporosis is a disease that can take time to manifest. Older individuals and those over 55 have an increased risk of developing the disease. This risk rises dramatically when the person is female. Men develop the disease at much lower rates.

Genetics and Ethnicity

It appears that genetics can contribute to osteoporosis. People with a family history of the disease have a higher chance of eventually suffering from it. Genetic ethnicity also plays a role. People of Asian or Caucasian decent will be more likely to acquire osteoporosis.

Body Size

Osteoporosis is about low bone mass. The body size of a person can make a difference. People with smaller bodies and skeletal frames lack the bone mass of larger people. This means smaller-framed individuals are at a higher risk of getting osteoporosis.

Hormonal Imbalances

Hormones can contribute greatly to the development of osteoporosis. Too little estrogen in women or testosterone in men can cause problems. The same is true of people with thyroid conditions that inhibit the production of certain hormones. These issues can stop your body from regenerating bone tissue potentially leading to osteoporosis.

Calcium Deficiency

Your body needs calcium to rebuild your bones. If you are living a life where you have long-term calcium deficiencies in your diet, then you are more likely to suffer from osteoporosis. The deficiency must be for a long time for this to occur.

Weight loss surgery that shortens or removes part of your gastrointestinal system can actually stop your body from being able to extract and absorb the calcium you need. This opens you up to a much greater chance of developing osteoporosis at some point.

Taking Corticosteroids

Corticosteroids in all forms inhibit the ability of your body to generate new bone tissue to some degree. This can slowly weaken your bones if you must take the medication regularly over many years. The result is an increased chance of acquiring osteoporosis later in life.

Lack of Physical Activity

You need to move and put weight on your bones in order to maintain proper bone mass and build new tissue. A lack of physical activity for long periods of time will weaken your bones. This could directly contribute to the development of osteoporosis as you age.

Smoking and Excessive Drinking

Excessive alcohol use and smoking are both activities that harm your body in numerous ways. Both can drain nutrients from your body and inhibit normal processes. Both kill important types of cells. You are far more likely to get osteoporosis if you smoke and drink too much.
