Cancer Preventing Diet

Although it may seem initially like a radical statement, many cancers can be prevented with a diet of healthy foods such as whole grains. Naturally, you will want to take advantage of many such foods with proven cancer-fighting qualities. You do not actually have to radically change your diet, but simply augment your current diet with foods that help prevent cancer.

Whole Grains

Studies have found that being overweight increases your risk of developing many forms of cancer. Adding whole grains into your diet will help keep your weight under control. That is because these types of breads contain much more fiber and nutrition than white bread. They also take longer to digest, which makes you feel full longer and prevents spikes in blood sugar that can lead to diabetes and cancer.

Calcium

There is some research that suggests that calcium has a protective effect versus cancer. One Swedish study found that subjects with the highest consumption had the lowest risk of developing colorectal cancer. It appears that it is best to get your calcium from dietary sources, rather than supplements.

Get Your Greens

Be sure to incorporate some greens into your cancer prevention diet. Non-starchy vegetables like spinach, broccoli, and beans have been found to protect against cancers of the stomach and esophagus.

Adding Nuts

Nuts are another healthy food that provide plenty of nutrition and added fiber. You can get these important foods into your diet by including them in snacks like trail mix or adding them into your salads or breakfast cereal.

Fat Facts

Another important factor in preventing cancer is to limit fats — specifically unhealthy fats. You should limit your intake of fats like saturated fat and trans fat.

Saturated fat increases your levels of blood cholesterol and can increase your risk of developing cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer.

Trans fat is made from oils using a technique called partial hydrogenation. This process increases the shelf life, but at a cost. Research has found that trans fats increase levels of unhealthy LDL cholesterol.

Putting It All Together

One important aspect of incorporating new foods into your diet is that you should do so gradually. A radical change of diet may be able to prevent many cancers, but it is also much harder to maintain. Try incorporating one cancer-preventing food per month until you find a diet that is sustainable and right for you.
