Avoid Depression by Not Overwhelming Yourself

Make a Plan to Avoid Depression

Keep your decisions simple and plan out your life to keep from being overwhelmed and depressed.

Keep It Minimal

Over the years, you’ve accumulated a lot of ‘stuff’ and it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the amount of things you own. There are many justifications for keeping an old t-shirt or a ‘just-in-case’ pair of shoes. You need to reserve affection for people and pets, not objects.

Do this by cutting out the clutter. It’s going to be hard, but you’ll feel relieved once you no longer have a mountain of clothes to choose from.

Plan Your Outfits

Feel tired and sluggish all day?

Decision fatigue is when your brain gets exhausted from having to make too many decisions. While more extreme than I recommend, all of President Obama’s suits are exactly the same. He does this because it’s one less thing for him to decide on, so that he can conserve his energy for more important decision making.

You don’t have to be so drastic and wear the same T-shirt and jeans every day. Instead, take an hour once a week and plan your outfits. Find a place from which you can quickly grab your outfit in the morning.

Plan your Meals

Not only does planning your meals for the week reduce stress, but it will reduce food waste, shopping trips, and grocery bills.

Start by using an excel sheet, a whiteboard, or even just a handwritten list to plan out dinner. You’ll know what you need to buy, which will make grocery shopping a lot easier.

Once you’re comfortable, expand to other meals.Freeze or refridgerate meals made on your planning day for added ease.

Plan to Relax

Schedule time to relax. I know, it sounds counter-intuitive to plan your relaxation time. You might think you’re too busy to relax. Mot relaxing is going to wear you out, make you feel anxious, and push you beyond your limits. Preparation will give you more time.

Having too many choices will keep you up at night and make your daily life harder to balance. This can lead to depression or worse. Make these changes and you will find relief.
